How Timberlock Became a Beloved Indian Lake Resort
Timberlock’s story begins more than a century ago, along the quiet shores of Indian Lake. Long before it became one of the most cherished Indian Lake resorts in Upstate New York, it was a rustic outpost for travelers looking to reconnect with nature and experience the untamed beauty of the Adirondacks.
With no electricity, no paved roads, and no distractions, it offered something rare even back then: true simplicity.
Diving Into the History of Timberlock
In the 1940s, a young boy named Dick Catlin spent his summers here, captivated by the lake, the trails, and the timeless rhythm of camp life. Those early experiences left a lasting impression—and decades later, Dick and his wife Barb would return not as guests, but as stewards. In 1963, they purchased Timberlock and began a new chapter for this historic Indian Lake resort, guided by a deep love for the land and a belief in the power of unplugged time together.
They raised their children—Bruce and Toni—on the lake and among the cabins and trees. The traditions of canoeing, hiking, swimming, and storytelling continued, passed down through each summer season. When Dick and Barb retired, their son Bruce and his wife Holly took the reins.
Now, their three children—Caroline, Gus, and Nick—continue the legacy, lending their own spirit to the camp.

Today, Timberlock remains one of the few family-run resorts of its kind in the Adirondacks. Guests stay in rustic cabins with lake views, eat together on our historic lakeside open-air dining porch, and spend their days exploring the area, playing music by the campfire, or simply listening to the loon calls echo across the water.
Timberlock wouldn’t be what it is without the next generation—our enthusiastic summer staff. Many of them grew up as campers and now return to work, bringing with them a love for the camp, a knack for hospitality, and a warm sense of belonging.
They help our guests settle into their cabins, lead group hikes, offer waterfront instruction, organize games, and make sure the rhythm of summer carries on. Their energy and dedication help preserve the joyful, inclusive atmosphere that defines Timberlock.
